The Castro Theater in San Francisco will be having its 2nd annual Noir City Christmas. Noir City Christmas is held on December 14th for one night only, so you’ll want plan ahead. I would even suggest purchasing tickets ahead of time, just to make sure that you don’t miss out.
"This Gun For Hire” is a very noir film noir. What do I mean by that? Several things. One is that there are layers and layers of dark shadow in almost every shot, a style typical of noir movies whose directors knew they were making noir- unlike, for instance, “The Maltese Falcon,” where the tendency toward dark shadows is more understated.
Asphalt Jungle is a 1950 classic noir film. This film follows a recently released from prison,“Doc” who has extensively planned the perfect jewel heist. Unfortunately, his luck quickly dissipates. Doc enlist the help of some fellow criminals and the heist itself goes down without so much as a glitch, well except for Louis being shot during the robbery. The problem with perfect crimes and to Doc’s poor luck is that something always goes wrong, regardless of how much careful planning took place.

“Angel Heart” is a gothic noir, combining the tropes of film noir with those of horror fiction. It's based on the novel “Falling Angel” by William Hjortsberg, but the novel is different from the movie in several ways.
The main character in the movie, Harry Angel, is a hard-boiled private detective of the classic noir type, working the mean streets of 1950s Brooklyn. He gets hired by a wealthy client named Louis Cyphre to find a missing popular singer who was involved in black magic, voodoo and Satanism. It seems that the singer, “Johnny Favorite,” has a certain contractual obligation to Mr. Cyphre, if you get my drift.

Sin City is often classified under Pulp Fiction rather than Noir, understandably considering that both have similar characteristics. I have actually been going back and forth with this movie as to whether it would stand as noir or pulp fiction. In the end, Sin City has passed classic noir test.
If you can overlook god-awful 70s clothes and hair, “The Yakuza” is one of the coolest film noirs to be made after the end of the classic noir period. It stars Robert Mitchum (of “Out of the Past” and other great noir movies) as well as Ken Takakura, star of many “Yakuza-eigo” or Japanese gangster movies.

“In a Lonely Place” isn't your typical film noir, in that the main character Dixon Steele (even though he is played by Humphrey Bogart, the quintessential noir actor) is neither a gangster nor a private eye- he's an alcoholic writer in love.
